Violence renewed in diamond producing area of Central African Republic

Violence was renewed in the diamond producing region of Bria in the Central African Republic, with news reports of a rebel attack on a rival group and civilians, which has left six people dead.

According to a by AFP,  militants from of the Convention of Patriots for Justice and Peace (CPJP) shot a missile at a vehicle carrying former rebels from the Union of Democratic Forces for Unity (UFDR) and a number of civilians. Six people lost their lives in the incident, bringing the number of people killed in the fighting through Sunday to 43.

Last week, Mathieu Yamba the Kimberley Process Chairman from the Democratic Republic of Congo issued a warning to KP members to be vigilant for diamonds originating the Central African Republic. The KP Working Group of Diamond Experts has already begun collecting information to develop a footprint for the diamonds from the region of Bria.
